San Luis Obispo Marathon + Half

Earth Day 2012

Well I’m back, but I don’t know for how long. It’s hard for me to get to this Blog, but I will try. Anyway, I wanted to post about a new and exciting event in San Luis Obispo – the Inaugural San Luis Obispo Marathon, Half Marathon + 5K races on Earth Day 2012 (April 22, 2012). The Marathon and Half Marathon races will benefit the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society through their Team In Training program. We’re very happy to have them this first year. Actually, it’s rather unheard of to have them the first year. The 5K race is a benefit for the local Special Olympics chapter. They do extraordinary work in this community.

The event is going to be great fun. There is a SLO Life Expo planned that will feature local SLO companies and their products and services. Companies that have originated here, like Jamba Juice, the wineries, food companies, etc. The event is hoping to attract 3000 runners/walkers in the first year.

If you want to know more about the event, email me at No1Spud@gmail.com.

And Now The Weather

We certainly had our share of rain this winter, but now, it’s just perfect here. Over the next 10 days we can expect sunshine and temperatures in the low to mid-70′s! Yeah!

The hills surrounding SLO are green and it’s just beautiful. So lucky to live here.

Laguna Grill

A Rainy Sunday

What to do on a rainy day after church – well go to Laguna Grill for lunch, of course! Nothing like a hot cheeseburger to warm your heart.

Laguna Grill is a great restaurant/sports bar that serves up great burgers, all kinds of sandwiches, a great selection of beer and, best of all, good service. Now I know that Firestone Grill in SLO is a sports bar hot spot as well, but the past few times I have been there, I have been really disappointed, in the food and the service. First of all Firestone is a zoo and you’d be hard pressed to get a smile from anyone working there. When it’s busy, you really can’t even hear yourself talk. It’s a bit of a pick-up joint too, but if that’s your cup of tea, go for it.

Yum!

Laguna Grill has a selection of big booths and tables to choose from for seating. It’s less crowded but that doesn’t mean its not good. It’s located on Los Osos Valley Rd. in the shopping mall, cross street is Madonna Rd. They have several big screen TV’s to watch games. Just today, they had every NFL game on. When your food is served, it’s hot and they don’t skimp on the portions. The service was fantastic and I could actually have a conversation.

Give Laguna Grill a try.

Rain! Rain! Rain!

Oh my gosh, it has been raining in San Luis Obispo non-stop for more than 24 hours! This is quite rare. Everything is drenched. But the rainbow will be a very green spring. That means spectacular hiking with even more spectacular views.

Look at my header picture on this Blog. This picture was taken some time in January a couple of years ago. The Morro in the foreground is Cerro San Luis or as the locals call it “Madonna Mountain” as it sits on the Madonna property. The next Morro is Bishop’s Peak. The City of SLO is below. I’ll have to get the names of the other Morros leading to the ocean. The last Morro is just a big rock, famously known as Morro Rock. That rock in Morro Bay is sacred to the Chumash Indians and they are the only people who are allowed to ascend the rock.

This picture was taken from a great, albeit challenging hike. It’s called the Lizzy Rd. hike (at least that’s what I know it as). The hill is used to train prospective SLO firefighters. I remember coming down from this hike and I saw young guys walking up in heavy boots and gear. One guy was carrying on his back a case of bottled water!

The great thing about rainy days – I get to write and read. Enjoy your rainy day (even if it isn’t raining where you are).

The Octagon Barn

There are lots of great barns in San Luis Obispo County. They give the area a sense of history, Majesty and charm. I often look at old barns and try to imagine days of old when they were filled with animals, hay and equipment like plows and shiny new horseshoes.

Octagon Barn

One of the most beautiful and historic barns in San Luis Obispo is the Octagon Barn because it has eight sides. I believe it was part of a dairy farm and it still stands today on South Higuera Rd. At one point, the barn was in such disrepair, it was scheduled to be torn down. But, a group of people came to the rescue and it stands today, as beautiful as ever. The barn is painted white and it was restored to its original look. As you can see by the picture, the barn is adorned with lights for Christmas.

I will take some shots of some of the other magnificent barns in the county and post some time soon. If you have a chance and you are driving around SLO at night this Christmas season, take a moment to drive past the Octagon Barn on lower Higuera.
